Description

This volume of López Vallecillos' poetry was published in 1977, a time of sharpening tensions and rising political violence in El Salvador. While many of his poetic colleagues were writing plainly political verse, had joined guerrilla movements, or had given up writing altogether, López Vallecillos continued in the vein of introspective, personal inquiry into the nature of urban life, love, and friendship that had characterized his earlier work. This book was written in "a gentle, tender tone without stridency, rising and falling to the rhythm of his own emotions, without being deranged by the passions and harshness around him," wrote Salvadoran critic Luis Gallegos Valdés, who considered this López Vallecillos's finest book of verse. (1) It suggests a writer trying to turn off the noise of the approaching civil war, in which many of his closest friends and collaborators would soon be deeply involved.
