Title

Letter from López Vallecillos to Claribel Alegría, 13 October 1969

Description

In this letter to the Salvadoran novelist and poet Claribel Alegría, addressed to her on Mallorca in Spain, López Vallecillos praises the recently published novel she wrote with her husband Darwin Flakoll, Cenizas de Izalco (Ashes of Izalco). The novel is set in rural El Salvador during the 1932 peasant uprising and army crackdown in El Salvador that became known as La Matanza (The Slaughter). The novel was one of the first literary treatments of the 1932 violence and is still widely read.

My dear Claribel,

[...]

Give my special greetings to your husband. When will you write another novel? I think the combination is excellent. I read Ashes of Izalco and it struck me as well-structured and with interesting characters and aspects that Salvadorans would recognize. Our novels amount to three; yours opens a new and important phase. Many young writers will follow your example.
